Stanford Professor Stephen H. Schneider, one of the world’s most highly respected climatologists, is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Professor Schneider conducts research and teaches in numerous global change areas including economic implications of climate change, environmental science/public policy issues, and the integrated assessment of global change and climatic modeling.

A contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Professor Schneider has consulted for federal agencies and/or White House staff since the 1970s. Widely published in peer-reviewed scientific media, he is also interested in advancing public understanding of science and in improving formal environmental education in primary and secondary schools.

Professor Schneider’s Stanford appointments include the Melvin and Joan Lane professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, Co-Director at the Center for Environment and Social Policy, Co-Director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources, and professor by courtesy in the Department of Civil Engineering.

At the FOCUS luncheon, Professor Schneider will discuss the causes of global warming and its effects on our everyday lives; the potential impact of California’s groundbreaking legislation to reduce CO2 emissions; and the challenges and opportunities for innovation that climate change presents to our business community.
